Sounds Like Keith Olbermann Is Already On The Outs With Al Gores Current TV.

It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I never understood how Keith Olbermann went from being just another face on ESPN to such a large media presence in the first place. He has a snarky style which I assume is supposed to make him come across as “ironic” or “edgy”. It has always been annoying to me. And, why his political opinions should matter to anyone but himself has also been a mystery to me. It is apparently a mystery to most TV viewers as well, for the article states that “his large MSNBC audience has not followed him to Current TV”.

I think this requires some perspective. First of all, Current TV is not available in as many homes as MSNBC. But also, was his audience truly “large” to begin with? His MSNBC shows were never a threat to Fox News, and barely edged out whatever CNN program they opposed.

To sum things up, I and apparently most of the cable news and opinion viewing world, will not miss Keith Olbermann if his gig at Current TV ends just like his stint at MSNBC did.

I wonder if these will be the Stonehenge or Easter Island monuments that future generations discover. You must believe that, if wind power was truly valuable on its own, without the government subsidies, these structures would not be abandoned in such numbers. Even in the Netherlands, the land of the iconic windmill, it seems the price of being green is too high. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration has delayed approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, effectively sending Canadian oil to China instead of the U.S. Gulf Coast. It’s almost as if they want the U.S. economy to fail.

Obama bows to the Emperor of Japan, 2009

Apologies Not Accepted – Investors.com.

It has now been revealed through a leaked diplomatic cable that the Japanese government refused to accept President Obama’s apology for the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II.

President Obama was wrong to offer an apology to the Japanese. He has no right to judge the actions of President Truman, who made the agonizing decision to unleash the most terrible weapon ever crafted by mankind. Truman’s options at the time were limited to using atomic bombs for the first time, or sending over 1 million Allied troops into near certain death in an all-out invasion of the Japanese home islands. The fighting on Okinawa alone cost the lives of 24,000 U.S. troops and over 100,000 Japanese.

The American people do not owe an apology for using the only weapon available that possessed the power to end the war that Imperial Japan started. The facts are that the atom bombs not only ended World War II, but through the fear of annihilation, ironically prevented World War III. The Cold War aside, the U.S. maintained peace with a belligerent and expansionist Soviet Union for 50 years due to the unspoken threat of nuclear retaliation.

The desire of our most recent leaders to apologize for the actions of their predecessors is disturbing. It’s as if no decision of a U.S. President is safe from the 20-20 hindsight of those who would sit in judgement, far removed from the unprecedented, historic events that led to those decisions. We certainly should not apologize for the actions that were taken to restore freedom to captured lands, or to remove tyrants from power, to advance the cause of human liberty in the world.

Major S.A. dealership suddenly shuts down|WOAI: San Antonio News.

This is evidently one of the Dodge dealers that the Obama administration allowed to stay open, while it forced others to close. This is the direct result of politicians making political decisions to reward friends and favored constituencies, and to punish perceived enemies.

Analyst: Even Dollar Stores Struggling In ‘Obama Depression’ « CBS Los Angeles.

How bad must the economy be if even the dollar stores are struggling? As the CEO of Wal-Mart stated in April, “our shoppers are running out of money.”

Immelt to jobs summit: Businesses need to do more – Jul. 11, 2011.

This is easy for Jeff Immelt to say. General Electric is the most politically favored corporation in America, having paid no income tax in 2010 despite earning $14.1 billion in profits. GE also stands to beneift from legislation (going into effect in 2012 in the U.S.), that will effectively ban the inexpensive and ubiquitous incandescent lightbulb in American homes and businesses. At $3.77 per bulb for GE CFL’s versus $0.27 for the old school incandescents, it is fairly obvious that GE (as well as Phillips and other companies) should earn considerably more revenue from CFL’s.

Speaking of Jeff Immelt, is President Obama being ironic, or merely cynical, in naming Immelt the chairman of a committee intended to spur American job creation?

“Since Immelt took over in 2001, GE has shed 34,000 jobs in the U.S., according to its
most recent annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. But it’s
added 25,000 jobs overseas.”

Transportation: California’s high-speed train wreck – latimes.com.

An artist's rendering of the proposed San Jose stop on the $43-billion high-speed rail line. (California High-Speed Rail Authority / Bloomberg)

The Los Angeles Times supports the concept of high-speed rail in California, only taking apparent issue with the politics of this proposal. The problem with this stance is, everything about high-speed rail in the United States is political. If high-speed passenger rail was economically viable, then existing commercial railroads would invest in it. Freight rail is poised for spectacular growth, because unlike passenger rail, there is a market for freight rail. Railroads in the U.S. have invested money in technology and equipment in anticipation of increased volume. Conversely, there is not enough demand, either now or in the foreseeable future, to make high-speed rail profitable. Even as gasoline prices continue to climb, Americans still prefer driving their cars to taking the train.

High-speed passenger rail has the potential to reduce carbon emissions and petroleum use, but in order to do so, it must present a pratical alternative to travel by car. As of now, it is still not seen that way by most Americans. Ironically, freight rail offers a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions right now, via increased use of intermodal transit.
